What is so special about Kedarnath?

Kedarnath Yatra is notable for being one of the Hindu Char Dham Yatra. Kedarnath Dham is situated at 3584 meters above sea level near the head of the Mandakini river. Kedarnath Mandir, which draws thousands of pilgrims every year, is located in Rudraprayag district in Uttarakhand. It is thought to have been founded by the Pandavas in the Mahabharata. Adi Guru Shankaracharya designed the current premises of this holy site. Today I have compiled some unknown facts about Kedarnath Yatra in this article.

  • Lord Shiva protects the Kedarnath shrine. Monsoon rains brought floods and landslides in 2013, destroying the whole Kedarnath area. Many people and worshippers died that year because of natural disasters, yet the temple of Kedarnath remained intact as if some divine power was shielding it from destruction.
  • The Lingam at Kedarnath is one of Lord Shiva's 12 Jyotirlingas. It is claimed to have blessed the Himalayas and kept them steeped in the godliness of Lord Shiva.
  • According to legend, when the two incarnations of Nara and Narayana-Lord Vishnu performed rigorous penance at Bharata Khanda's Badrikashram, they worshipped a Shiva linga that had emerged from the earth in beautiful form. Lord Shiva was pleased, and he appeared to Nara and Narayana and asked them to ask for a gift. Nara and Narayan then requested Lord Shiva to reside permanently in Kedarnath as a Jyotirlinga. So those who come here to worship Lord Shiva are no longer enslaved by their life's sufferings.
  • The Kedarnath temple contains Shiva lingam with idols of Lord Krishna, Parvati, the five Pandavas, their wife Draupadi, and Veerabhadra, the vehicle of Lord Shiva Nandi, and other gods and goddesses. The Shiva Lingam at Kedarnath temple is shaped like a triangle. Therefore, it is distinct among Shiva temples kept in the 'Garbha Griha' of the temple.
  • Kedarnath Temple, a divine Himalayan destination, is always guarded by Bhairon Nath Ji, whose temple is situated to the south of Kedarnath Temple. Bhairon Nath Ji is the ferocious avatar of Lord Shiva, and he is associated with destruction and devastation. According to popular belief, Bhairon Nath Ji wards off evil spirits and protects the temple from harm.

Plan your trip with Manchala Mushafir and get to experience the beautiful nature and the temple of great mythological importance.
